Gardenia Yellow Pigment - Crocin                                                        

Gardenia Yellow Pigment, also known as Crocin, belongs to the carotenoid series. It is the yellow pigment in gardenia, and its yellow pigment component is carotenoid saffron, which is the same as saffron. The main components of gardenia yellow pigment are carotenoids such as crocin, as well as iridoid glycosides such as geniposide, flavonoids, and chlorogenic acid. Safranin and safranic acid are rare water-soluble carotenoids, with multiple conjugated double bonds present in their molecules. On the one hand, they give gardenia pigment yellow, and on the other hand, they are also one of the reasons for the instability of gardenia pigment. There are seven derivatives of saffron acid in gardenia yellow pigment, and the difference in color and brightness between these seven derivatives is minimal. However, as the number of glucose genes connected to saffron acid increases, the color tone of the derivatives decreases, and the color changes from red to yellow.

Stability

pH value has almost no effect on color tone. Its color tone is more stable than β-carotene in both acidic (pH value 4~6) and alkaline (pH value 8~11) conditions, especially in alkaline, the yellow color is more vivid. The absorbance is maximum near the wavelength of 440nm. It has good salt resistance, reduction resistance and microbial resistance. Under neutral or alkaline conditions, gardenia yellow has good light resistance and heat resistance, but at low pH value, it has poor heat resistance and light resistance. Poor, easy to brown. It has a good dyeing effect on protein and starch, that is, it has good coloring power on hydrophilic foods, but it is not stable enough in aqueous solutions. Fading is more significant in acidic conditions than in alkaline conditions. It is quite stable to metal ions (such as aluminum, calcium, lead, copper, tin, etc.). Iron ions tend to make gardenia yellow and turn black.

 

Gardenia yellow pigment liquid is orange-yellow at pH 1~7, and bright yellow at pH 8~12. The pigment stability is poor under acidic conditions, but the pigment stability is good under neutral and alkaline conditions. Similar to other carotenoid pigments, gardenia yellow pigment is less resistant to sunlight. Except for Fe and Cu, common metal ions have basically no effect on gardenia yellow.

PRODUCTION


 

Green Spring uses automated machines to remove unfresh gardenias and thoroughly clean the gardenias. Our technicians then deeply process the gardenias to extract gardenia yellow.

 

The fruits of the Rubiaceae plant gardenia are peeled, crushed, and made into powder. The powder is extracted with water or ethanol-water solution, and refined to obtain a paste or further refined into gardenia yellow pigment.

 

The ethanol solution extraction method is as follows:


Crush the ripe gardenia fruit and add CaCO3. Use 20% ethanol solution to extract at 75 ℃ for 4h, change the extract twice in the middle, filter, the filtrate flows through porous adsorption resin, elute the resin with 25% ethanol solution, then use 50% ethanol solution to elute the resin and collect the eluent, reduce pressure to concentrate the eluent, dry to obtain the finished pigment, or vacuum film evaporation and concentration, spray drying.

APPLICATION

 


 

Usage
Add the required amount of pigment to an appropriate amount of water or dilute ethanol, dilute and stir evenly, then add this yellow solution to the product to be dyed and stir evenly. The operating temperature should be below 80 degrees.

 

Food Industry
Gardenia yellow pigment can inhibit the oxidation of 80% linoleic acid, so it can be used as an antioxidant in food processing; it has good heat resistance, and the pigment residual rate is above 85% under the conditions of 80 ℃ and 120 minutes; it is stable to light irradiation within the visible light range (40lun -700nln), but unstable to light irradiation within the wavelength range of 250nm-390nm. Therefore, gardenia yellow pigment can be used as an antioxidant and colorant in the food industry.
Gardenia yellow pigment has excellent dyeing ability for protein, starch, etc., and can be widely used in various foods such as cakes, candies, beverages, jellies, biscuits, ice cream, etc.

 

Textile Industry
The study shows the dyeing performance of natural gardenia yellow on silk fabrics. By changing the dyeing conditions, direct dyeing and mordant dyeing methods were used to dye silk, and the optimized dyeing process was obtained through orthogonal test analysis. The results show that gardenia yellow can directly dye silk fabrics, the amount of dye has the greatest impact on the dyeing results, and the dye has good performance improvement. When gardenia yellow is mordant dyed, it is suitable to use post-mordant dyeing. Compared with direct dyeing, the color of the fabric after post-mordant dyeing does not change significantly. Except that the light fastness does not exceed level 3, the other fastnesses are basically above level 4, which is more restored.
